The Government of Mauritius, in partnership with the University of Mauritius, offered their first Commonwealth Scholarship in 2002.

The award was for undergraduate study, in view of the limited range of postgraduate opportunities available in the country. Policy is to offer such awards to other countries within the SADC region. The initial scholarship has been offered to a student from Tanzania.

It is likely that such awards will be offered every two years, with the next being available for entry in 2004. An announcement is expected in mid 2003.
